Summer in Utah has a way of calling everyone outside. People are hiking, grilling, going to parks, watching kids play sports, and trying to enjoy every bit of sunshine before the season flies by. When the temperature climbs, though, it is important to keep heat safety in mind. At Medallus Medical, we want you and your family to enjoy summer without letting dehydration, heat exhaustion, or sunburn crash the party.
Planning ahead makes a big difference. The most common heat-related issues we see in our clinics are dehydration and heat exhaustion. Your body cools itself by sweating, but when it is extremely hot or humid, sweating may not be enough. That can cause your body temperature to rise quickly.
Water is your best friend in the summer. Try not to wait until you feel thirsty before drinking. Thirst can be a sign that your body is already running low on fluids. Keep water nearby throughout the day, especially if you are outside, exercising, or spending time in the sun. Soda, energy drinks, and too much caffeine can make dehydration worse, so water is still the winner here.
Plan your outdoor activities with the heat in mind. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, clammy skin, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, or a fast heartbeat. When someone starts feeling this way, move them to a cooler place, have them rest, and help them drink water. Symptoms that get worse or do not improve within an hour should be checked by a medical provider. Heat exhaustion can turn into heat stroke, which is a serious emergency. Confusion, very high body temperature, or hot skin with little or no sweating are warning signs that need immediate medical attention.
Sun protection matters too. A sunburn may seem like just part of summer, but it can cause real skin damage and increase long-term risk. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Hats, sunglasses, and lightweight protective clothing can also help keep your skin protected.
Medallus Medical is here seven days a week when summer does not go according to plan. Whether you need care for dehydration, a painful sunburn, dizziness, or another summer health concern, our walk-in clinics are ready to help. Stay cool, drink your water, and enjoy a safe Utah summer.
